Let’s face it, a company is only as good as the people who lead it. While it takes a great product, as well as financial, operational, and sales/marketing prowess to drive success, it is leadership skills that formulate the culture that inspires employees to show up and deliver their very best.

I have led small teams, large teams, and entire organizations. I’ve seen the good, the bad, and the ugly when it comes to leaders leading with their best and their worst selves. In fact, I’ve been all of those leaders.

I was very successful early in my career, recognized for quick thinking, making decisions, and getting things done. All of the things that someone in the 90s was rewarded for doing. As I rose up the corporate ladder, I gained confidence and experience which led me to co-found an online tax software company with three co-workers, called TaxAct. Together, we built a strong culture that focused on getting the job done with respect, appreciation, and integrity.

In 2012, we sold the company. Since then, I have reflected on leadership while mentoring and coaching startups and executives. A few years ago, I discovered the Enneagram. As I reflect on how I showed up throughout my career, I see how my healthy and sometimes unhealthy type 8 motivations, wings, and paths all had an effect on my team and quite frankly, the entire organization. If only I had known the Enneagram then and led with my best self every single day. What more could we have accomplished by recognizing how each of us sees the world through a different lens?

With the knowledge of the Enneagram, I am dedicated to helping people better understand themselves, and how they are viewed by others, enhancing their personal relationships, dealing with stress, and making better decisions. Armed with this new understanding, my hope is that my clients can lead with their best selves and find more success as a result.
