“It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.” Galatians 5:1
I fell passionately, head-over-heels in love with Jesus in my mid-20’s and began to take in scripture in every form and fashion I could. I practiced spiritual disciplines, and I believed that all of God’s promises were real. Yet I found myself circling back to familiar strategies and behaviors over and over again – toxically relating to my husband, dumping anger onto my kids, responding in unhealthy ways to the world around me, and turning in on myself with a vengeance. I just could not seem to experience the freedom in Christ that God promises.
At times I determined that freedom must be intended for eternity and I just needed to hold on until then. There were times I actually believed I was just more broken, more depraved than others and I was the one person God could not fix. (Of course a Type 1 would reach that conclusion. 😉) The rabbit-holes I would go down or the “angry outburst behaviors” I returned to over and over felt overwhelming.
I began to receive counseling through our church counseling ministry, became a lay counselor myself, and then was introduced to the Enneagram by a precious young lady who I was counseling back in 2019. For all of the healing I had experienced up to that point, discovering my internal world as a Type 1, was a deeply emotional experience. I felt seen at the core of my being. It brought tears and redemption that allowed Jesus to penetrate my internal world with new levels of genuine healing.
The gospel-centered Enneagram teaching has become a pivotal tool in my healing journey, and I have seen first-hand that offering this tool to others in a meaningful way brings them the same kind of healing that I experienced. And as a Type 1, I want to bring this good vision to the world within my spere of influence!
“If the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.” John 8:36
